What On Earth Is Campus Rec?

Are you a Laurentian student who has no idea what Campus Rec means? If so, you’re not alone. I just recently discovered it and it’s definitely something we students can benefit from. Read on to find out more and see what Campus Rec can offer you!

What is Campus Rec?

Voyageurs Campus Rec (which stands for “Recreation”) is a department of Laurentian University whose main goal is keeping our campus active and healthy. They are in charge of the indoor and outdoor fitness facilities, the pool, the fitness classes and clubs, and intramurals.

Why is it important?

Campus Rec plays an important role on our university campus because they encourage the Laurentian community to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle and to find balance between work and recreation. Their mission is to give you as many opportunities as possible to stay active, relieve stress, meet new friends and have fun.

Who runs it?

There are many dedicated people behind Campus Rec. This includes the senior staff team in charge of programming, development, marketing and administration as well as student-supervisors, the front desk team and the intramurals convenors.

What’s in it for me?

Campus Rec offers students many ways to get active and have fun. You can choose to participate in a sports club, a group training or wellness class, or the intramurals. You can also take advantage of their facilities which include the weight room, the indoor and outdoor tracks, the rockclimbing wall, the Jeno Tihanyi olympic pool, the Alphonse Raymond fitness studio, the outdoor trails and the courts where you can play squash, tennis, volleyball, badminton and basketball.

They also provide programs for kids, including year-round youth camps, birthday party bookings and swimming lessons.

And if you’re looking for some experience in the field, they offer leadership and employment/internship opportunities for Laurentian students as well as high school students.

What’s free and what isn’t?

For full-time students, access to all the facilities mentioned above is FREE.

To participate in the intramurals, sports clubs or fitness classes students can pay a small extra fee. However, Campus Rec is offering a new FREE kickboxing class Tuesdays and Fridays! Click here to see the schedule and prices for fitness classes.

Access to the outdoor trails is free for everyone in the Sudbury community. You can also choose to explore the Laurentian trails by snowshoe or cross country ski for a competitively low price.

If you’re interested in seeing one of Laurentian’s many varsity teams in action, full-time students can enjoy that for free as well. (Exception: Varsity hockey games come at an extra price for students which includes transportation to and from the Countryside arena.)

Who can participate?

Students, staff and faculty of the Laurentian community are Campus Rec’s first priority and are all welcome to take advantage of what they have to offer.

Campus Rec is also open to anyone in the Sudbury community who’s interested in getting active with Laurentian.

How can I get involved?
