Laurentian's First Ever Fitness Classes

Hey Voyageurs!

If you haven’t heard by now, Laurentian is offering our first ever fitness classes this semester! While these classes were designed with students' needs in mind; staff/faculty and community are more than welcome to join as well. You don’t need to be an elite athlete or in a special competitive program to participate, as the variety of classes speak to all levels of fitness, interests and styles. Between Monday to Friday, there are 12 classes to choose from at various different times throughout the day. All classes are taught by certified professionals from well-established businesses. Not only are the instructors fun and love what they do, they also know when to push you and when to give you a break. Anyone can participate, no matter your fitness level.

You can buy passes at the door of your class or within the campus recreation office (beside the gym front desk in Ben Avery).

I took advantage of the two week trial period to take a few classes and give you a student’s point of view. Check out the video above to see what the bootcamp, Zumba and yoga classes were like! But before you take a look at the video, keep in mind that the studio is a work in progress and renovations are currently taking place to have a modernized fitness studio on campus. There have already been quite a few changes since the classes I took, like new equipment and mirrors.

I know that, as a student, it’s hard to make the time to stay active. But staying fit has plenty of benefits that can make life as a student a bit easier. It can give you more energy, reduce stress and increase focus. Laurentian is making it easier for you to stay active, meet like-minded people and have fun with these fitness classes. All you need to do is show up! But sometimes that’s the hardest part. I have plenty of excuses for not going to workout, like:

I don’t have time.

Being a student with a full-time course load and a part-time job, I don’t have much free time. So why would I spend it working out? Well, that’s why these classes are so perfect for me. A lot of them are during a short break in between my lectures, so why not go? If you have a couple of hours in between classes, take advantage of that time to get a quick workout in. Then you can focus on your schoolwork when you really have the chance to sit down and do it.

The weather is ugly, I don’t want to go outside.

Living off campus, going anywhere in the winter is a chore. But if I’m already on campus, it’s easy for me to get to a class. There’s no need to drive to a gym or studio off campus and out of my way. This is especially useful for those of you who live in residence. It’s just a five minute walk from your place!

I don’t want to be sweaty all day and I hate showering at gyms.

After a workout, I just want to hop in my nice shower at home and put on some comfy clothes. Going to workout in the middle of the day means that I need to shower at the gym and get ready there, which is not my favourite thing to do, especially being someone who likes makeup and having my hair done. But these classes are made to accommodate everyone’s schedule and there are a bunch of evening classes offered so that you can head straight home after your class!

Start now for the summer! There are only seven weeks left of classes (there will be no classes during reading week) so ditch the excuses and go try them! And since there isn’t much school left (yay!) keep an eye out on Campus Rec’s social media accounts for a special end-of-the-year deal.

These fitness classes are new for Laurentian and they know that nothing is perfect and there’s always room for improvement. So if you have any suggestions, whether it be for a new class, your favourite instructor, or anything else, feel free to direct message any of Campus Rec’s social media accounts. Their mission is to become the healthiest (and as a result happiest) campus, so they’d appreciate any feedback or suggestions on how to achieve that!
