Healthy Snacking at University? 8 Easy Snacks LU Students Should Know

When your day is jam-packed with classes, assignments, exams, attempting to balance a social life and maybe a job, when do you have time to think about eating healthy?

Let's face it- when you've just finished running from the Ben Avery to the Classroom building, a quick bite to eat from Tims or Starbucks can easily be justified.

But, healthy power snacks are the perfect solution for eating well on a university budget and schedule!

We asked students in the Laurentian Community to share their go-to healthy snacks that get them through busy days. Here are their favourites!

1. Fruit and Yogurt Parfait

The 'parfait' treat! All you need is yogurt and fruit- it's that easy. Add some honey and granola to take this snack to the next level! Pre-make to take to classes and the lib.

2. Rice Cakes, rice cakes, and even more rice cakes.

You can put pretty much anything on rice cakes and it will taste good. Our student's favourites included PB & banana and avocado. Throw in some fruits or vegetables to top off your sweet or savory treat!

3. Hummus Galore!

There's nothing easier than vegetables and dip. LU students like dipping crackers, pitas, and pretzels in hummus, or making their own from scratch! Find the recipe here.

4. Smoothies

Smoothies are the perfect go-to for a nutritious snack at anytime of the day. And the best part is that most of them require very few ingredients! Above are some of our favourites.

5. No-bake granola balls

Don't let studying get you down- keep these treats with you to keep your energy high! They're simple to make, and even better- no baking involved. Just mix all ingredients in a bowl and bam! Find out how here.

6. Oven-roasted chickpeas

Chickpeas are a student's saving grace. You can toss em' in practically anything, they're dirt cheap, and nutritious too. Now you can make them into a crunchy snack that's stacked with fiber and protein to give you that extra boost of energy!

7. Trail-mix

You can buy ready-made trail mix at any local grocery store, or combine your favourite nuts, seeds, dry fruit and sweets to make your own! (Ps, dark chocolate is a-okay!)

8. Apple sandwiches with oats, peanut butter, and dark chocolate chips

I don't know about you, but these are my favourite kind of sandwich! PB & J on bread is so 2015. Find the recipe here.
