An Insomniacs Guide to Better Sleep

As a mother, full time student, and former insomniac, I know the importance of a healthy sleep schedule! I also know just how challenging this can be.

Not only are we a mere week and a half away from the biggest holiday of the year, we're also smack dab in the middle of exams! Talk about pressure!

If you're having trouble sending yourself off to dreamland, try incorporating a few of my favourite sleep tips into your nightly routine.

1. Indulge in a soothing, herbal tea

When prepping your body for it's nightly routine, it's important to make sure you limit your caffeine intake when the evening hits. Caffeine too late into the night gets your body working when it should be calming itself down! Instead, try and indulge in a soothing, herbal tea to help yourself unwind and relax. A hot cup of chamomile or lavender tea in the evening will send you off to dreamland a little easier.

2. Take a hot bath

Baths may not be for everyone, but trust me when I say that they're one hell of a relaxation tool! Taking a hot bath before bed allows your muscles to loosen and relax, relieving all of the day's tension. All of that warmth will help make those eyes feel just a little bit heavier and ready to lay in that big, comfy bed.

3. Unplug an hour before bed

Probably one of the hardest, yet most effective sleep tip there is! We all love to watch our favourite shows or creep our favourite social media while we're laying in bed trying to fall asleep. Technology before bed however is a big no no! The stimulation that it gives your brain will counter your desire to sleep and keep you up that much longer. Do yourself a favour and unplug a minimum of an hour before your desired bedtime.

4. Read

Reading before bed is probably one of the most relaxing activities you can do! If you were looking for another hobby to replace the technology that you've given up for your bedtime routine, reading is the way to go. It allows your mind to quiet itself and by focusing on the words in front of you it will help to make those eyes nice and heavy and ready for some good shuteye!

5. Meditate

Some may call it corny, I like to call it effective! Sitting quietly and tuning out the world for even a few minutes every night will do your mind wonders. It's important not only for your body to recognize that it's time to settle down, but for your mind to feel it as well. It's impossible to get a good night's rest when your mind is racing a mile a minute, so practice some quiet meditation as part of your nightly routine and give that brain of yours a rest!
