Exam season just finished! After constant stress, cramming and all-nighters, it may seem like every students dream to eat and sleep the break away.
The holidays can be chaotic too, but it is important to keep both your physical and mental health a priority over the Christmas break!
Here are some tips from fellow students on how to take care of yourself this holiday season and prepare for 2017:
1. Stay Active
It's important to keep your daily routine and exercise during the holidays! It may not be your regular gym routine, but can fit in your 30 minutes of physical activity in a variety of ways over the holidays! The weather may be frigid, but winter offers fun outdoor activities and scenic landscapes.
Physical activity everyday is important, so even small bits are beneficial to you.
Pro-tip: Park far away from the mall entrance to get in that extra physical activity!
2. Eat Well
It can be extremely easy to veg out during the holidays where you're surrounded by home cooked meals, baked goods, and amazing, yet probably unhealthy foods. Keep these tips in mind to avoid overindulging:
Eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of 'saving' your appetite for that huge turkey dinner
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
Don't deprive yourself of yummy Christmas treats.. enjoy in moderation!
Pro-tip: Never go to a holiday party on an empty stomach. Eat a healthy snack before going out!
3. De-stress
The 'most wonderful time of the year' can be a stressful one, too. It is important to take time to relax during the holiday craze. Catch up on the rest you lost during exams, but be careful not to laze around too much!
Find creative outlets you like to de-stress. Read, paint, play music, drink your favourite tea, and whatever else your heart desires.
Pro-tip: If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed, meditate for a few minutes each day. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health!
4. Reflect
2016 sure has been quite the year! It is great to reflect during the holidays as we approach the new year. As the year comes to a close, reflect on what has changed and what has stayed the same. Recount the things that are going well in your life and what you have done well over the last year, and what needs some changing.
It is easy to focus on what we don't have, and we can forget to be grateful for what we do have. Give yourself some credit, and look at 2017 as a year of opportunity and growth!
Pro-trip: New Year's resolutions can put a lot of unnecessary pressure on us all. Start making small changes towards your goals today!
5. Reach Out and Give Back
Loneliness, isolation, and depression are concerns for many people in the winter and over the holidays. Keep in mind the mental health of yourself, family, friends, and community members. Take on an active role to support those in need. Volunteering with a local non-profit organization over the holidays is a great way to get involved in the community and give back!
Pro-tip: Food kitchens are busy during the holidays and helping hands are always welcomed. It the season of giving, after all! Doing good will make you feel good!
The most important tip of all is remember to spend time with your loved ones and be grateful. Bring down the stress and bring up the joy!
Happy Holidays from your Campus Rec blogging team! Tune in for more in the new year!
