7 Fitness Classes to Try This Winter

Are you already falling behind on your New Year's Resolutions? Do you want to stay in shape throughout the long, cold winter but don't have the motivation? LU's fitness classes are back for the winter semester and might be perfect for you! Read on to learn more about the classes and what to expect from each one.

Where? All classes are held in the Alphonse Raymond gym with the exception of SUP Yoga which is held in the Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Pool.

How? Just show up! Pay at the door with credit, debit/credit or cash!

Who? Everyone can participate! Students, staff and faculty of Laurentian, as well as other members of the Sudbury community.

When? See schedule below.

How much? See prices below. My favourite is the 99$ unlimited semester pass which gives you the flexibility to do as many classes as you want, as often as you want! (With the exception of SUP Yoga, which is not included in the unlimited package.)

Sunrise Yoga

LU students practice yoga in the Alphonse Raymond gym.

Instructor: Desiree

When: Monday & Wednesday mornings, 7:00am to 7:45am

What to expect: A mix of gentle and strengthening poses to start off your day in a mindful way.

What to bring: Comfy clothes, a blanket or sweater to start and finish off the session, a yoga mat if you have one (if not, mats are provided).

Why you should go: It's an awesome way to get into yoga if you're new to the practice, and also great for more experienced yogis to deepen their practice. Either way, you'll leave the class feeling much more rejuvenated than when you came!

Crossfit

LU students take a break during a Crossfit class.

Instructors: Lisa & Sara

When: Monday & Wednesday evenings, 5:00pm to 6:00pm

What to expect: A strength and cardio workout where you'll learn proper form and techniques for increased power, balance and agility.

What to bring: Workout clothes and a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Why you should go: It's a great full-body workout, and perfect for people looking to try something new!

Cardio Kickboxing

Instructor Ryan and LU students doing cardio kickboxing.

Instructors: Ryan & Matt

When: Monday & Wednesday evenings, 6:00pm to 7:00pm

What to expect: The class starts off with a challenging cardio workout that's suitable for all levels of fitness. You then learn the kickboxing techniques and get to practice them with a partner, with Ryan & Matt guiding you and giving you tips along the way.

What to bring: Workout clothes and a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Why you should go: It's a fun way to get fit with a friend, and a great way to meet new people! The cardio workout at the beginning of class will definitely help you attain your fitness goals.

SUP Yoga

Instructor Ashley and LU students doing SUP Yoga.

Instructor: Ashley

When: Tuesday & Thursday afternoons, 1:00pm to 2:00pm

What to expect: Yoga on a paddle board in the Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Pool! You'll follow gentle sequences of yoga poses to relax and destress, while improving your balance.

What to bring: Comfortable shorts and a t-shirt, and a towel.

Why you should go: Usually only offered in the summer on the lake, SUP Yoga at Laurentian is a great way to try a new activity despite our long, cold winter months. It's also offered at a major discount for students so take advantage of the low price!

Abs & Glutes

A student lifting weights during a fitness class.

Instructor: Valerie

When: Tuesday & Thursday afternoons, 4:10pm to 4:40pm

What to expect: A group exercise class focusing on strengthening the core and lower body, great for all levels!

What to bring: Workout clothes and a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Why you should go: A quick workout you can fit in at the end of your day or before your evening class. Great for people low on time that like working with a group for motivation!

Zumba

A group of students jumping during a Zumba class.

Instructor: Jordan

When: Tuesday & Thursday evenings, 5:00pm to 6:00pm

What to expect: A cardio-dance workout to a mix of latin and pop songs that will get your heart rate going, but that's so fun you won't even notice! You'll finish off with a slower-paced song to cool down and stretch.

What to bring: Workout clothes and a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Why you should go: A perfect way to get active when you really don't have the motivation for a traditional workout. It's extra fun to go with a group of friends too!

Hip Hop

LU students showing off their moves during a hip hop fitness class.

Instructor: Miranda

When: Tuesday evenings, 7:30pm to 8:30pm

What to expect: Classes start with an easy-to-follow warmup dance and stretches to get you ready. Then, Miranda shows you step-by-step moves to one of her favourite songs and helps you as everyone practices the steps together. At the end you and your class get to show off your moves to each other!

What to bring: Comfy clothes that will make you feel like Beyoncé.

Why you should go: An awesome way to try something new and not even realize the workout you're getting! Fun for not only experienced dancers, but complete newbies like myself that trip over their own feet!
