4 Ways for LU Students to Get Outside this Winter

Winter can be dreadfully long.. and you're probably sick and tired of this happening more often than you'd like:

With less daylight and the harsh Sudbury weather, winter can seem to last forever.

However, this little northern town has no shortage of winter activities!

Here are four ways you can get outside on campus and enjoy the snow, while also getting physically active:

1. Cross Country Skiing

Did you know that we have several kilometers of ski trails right on campus?! Skiing is an excellent way to stay active (and warm) while the snow is falling. It's easy to learn, too! You can ski around the track, or pick up a map a the chalet and hit the trails.

Where: The Laurentian Stadium Ski Chalet- right across from the Ben Avery gym on the opposite side of the track!

When: 10am-4pm everyday!

How much? Ski rentals are student friendly. $10 gets you a pair of ski boots, skis and poles. Oh, and a whole day of skiing!

Student Favourite: "My favourite trail would be The Gully Loop or Gene's Gentle Jaunt. Both are fairly flat and easy for beginners!" -Victoria F

2. Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a growing in popularity as a winter sport. The Lake Laurentian Conservation area is an excellent place to snowshoe, starting with trails right on campus! Pick up a snowshoe trail map at the ski chalet!

Where: The Laurentian Stadium Ski Chalet

When: 10am-4pm everyday!

How much? Snowshoe rentals cost a low price of only $10 a day.

Student Favourite: "I like the 'Around Bennett Lake' trail for snowshoeing. You can leave right from campus for an adventure, which is amazing." -Megan L

3. Skating

With one in practically every neighbourhood, there is no shortage of outdoor rinks in Sudbury. The Ramsey Lake Skating Path is also close to LU. Take the bus to Science North to begin your skate across the lake!

Where? -Ramsey Lake Skating Path

-Riverdale Outdoor Rink on York Street

-Queen's Skating Oval

When? Ramsey Lake Skating Path is open Monday-Friday 4pm-8pm.

Queen's Skating oval is open Monday-Friday 4pm-10pm, Saturday and Sunday 12pm-10pm

How much? Unfortunately, there are no skate rentals at the outdoor locations. It is FREE, though!

Student Favourite: "I like playing shinny at the Riverdale rink with my buds" -Marc L

4. Taking a Stroll

We are very privileged to have a campus with an abundance of nature around it. Within minutes, you can be out of sight of any building and surrounded by trees and lakes! Winter walks are quite beautiful and a great way to get in your 30 minutes of daily exercise.

Where: You can go for a stroll anywhere on campus! Some popular destinations include the campus beach, the flagpole, Loach's Road, as well as the Lake Laurentian Conservation area! All of these are accessible from campus!

When: Anytime, any day!

How much: Nature is FREE!!!!

Student Favourite: "I love to go to the beach to watch the sunset. Winter sunsets here in Sudbury are incredible!" - Ben D
