12 Clubs to Get Active on Campus!

Did you know that there are over 12 clubs on campus for you to try something new AND get active?! With the school year wrapping up, you may want to read up on different clubs to try in September.

Here's the low down from the club presidents:

 

The Outers Club

What is it? The Laurentian Outers Club is a club run by students for students. We are a group of students passionate about getting outside and sharing our passion with others. Our goals are to get students outside no matter past experiences, program of choice, or language!

When and where? We are different from most clubs as we don't have regular meeting times or locations. Our meetings are our trips. Our trips vary based on season.

Who can join? Our club is fully open to any student at Laurentian University! We run trips and programs for beginners as well as for the avid outdoors person!

Accomplishments/Opportunities: One of the coolest things we have done this year is a 3-day canoe trip through the beautiful Temagami wilderness. We share bonfires, good food, and stories.

Our club also partnered with The Backcountry Babes, a group running girls-only outdoor events!

Historical Fencing Club

What is it? The Historical Fencing club is where we learn how to use swords from the Renaissance period. This martial art is recreated from fencing manuals written in the 16th and 17th century. We specialize in the rapier; a long thin blade with a fancy handle. We meet Mondays at 8:30, Thursdays at 6, and Saturdays at 4. All practices take place in the gym at the Alphonse Raymond Pavilion. There is a 50$ semester fee or a 5$ drop in fee.

Where and when? Mondays at 8:30, Thursdays at 6, and Saturdays at 4 in the Alphonse Raymond gym.

Who can join? Any student or member of the public can join the club. Beginners are always welcome. We are all learning so it's easy to catch up to everyone.

Accomplishments/Opportunities: This year we will participate in the Montreal Open tournament in April. Two of our members will be competing. Contact tb_laverdure@laurentian.ca for all your fencing inquiries!

 

Laurentian Synchro Club

What is it? We are a synchronized swimming club that both trains and competes with the Canadian University Synchro Swim League (CUSSL).

Where and when? We try and coordinate the swim times around our swimmers' schedules. This year we practice Tuesday and Thursday nights from 8:30-10:00pm at the Laurentian pool.

Who can join? Our club is open to all! We encourage all new swimmers even those who have never tried synchro to join our club. CUSSL has both a beginner level for new to the sport athletes and an elite stream for experienced swimmers. All genders are welcome as well, there are no limitations whatsoever!

Accomplishments/Opportunities: This year we traveled across Canada for our competitions. We competed in places like Hamilton, Kingston, Montreal and other places. At Nationals this weekend our 5 person team placed 10th!

Swing Dance Society

What is it? This is a group for anyone at Laurentian University or in Sudbury who knows how or would like to learn how to swing dance.

When and where? We meet every Wednesday at 7pm in the Alphonse gym!

Who can join? No partner or experience is required, please bring indoor shoes that are dry and relatively clean.

Accomplishments/Opportunities: This year we have hosted Saturday Night Swing dances at Little Montreal, and some members attended a conference called TUX10.

Rugby Club

What is it? This club is meant to help the sport grow, we want to bring the atmosphere of this sport to students who play rugby to university so they may continue doing something they enjoy. We have the goal of introducing new players to the sport with hopes of them bringing it back to their own towns and cities to help spread it.

When and where? We held practices on Saturday afternoons from 2:30-4:30 on the practice field.

Who can join? Our club is open to all people, whether you are male or female, beginner or a seasoned player. We focus on teaching the skills of the game to help newer players grow while helping the more experienced players sharpen their skills, all while in a fun environment.

Accomplishments/opportunities: Apart from being the first official Laurentian rugby club, I believe we have accomplished a great deal in regards to our success with practices and turnouts. We are hoping to get out to some tournaments and games in the fall!

Voyageurs Weightlifting/Powerlifting Club

What is it? Voyageurs Weightlifting/Powerlifting's aim is to develop the sport of weightlifting and powerlifting at Laurentian and the Sudbury area. If you want to compete in weightlifting or powerlifting, improve sport performance in general, or use it for fitness and recreation then this is the place to be. We have the most qualified coach and best equipment in the city.

When and where? The weightlifting group practices Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6pm in the Laurentian Gym. The powerlifting group schedules their own practices.

Who can join? Anyone may join the club; novice or elite!

Accomplishments/Opportunities: This year, we had:

  • 3 lifters compete at the Ontario Summer Games

  • 3 lifters compete at the Ontario Junior Championships

  • 3 lifters qualify Ontario Senior Championships (to be held at the end of March)

  • 1 lifter to qualify for Canadian Senior Championships (to be held in May)

Volleyball Club

What is it? The Laurentian Volleyball club is a club for students to improve their volleyball skills and to have fun!

When and where? Every Sunday at 7pm, players gather in the Varsity gym to run drills and scrimmages to practice in a fun and friendly environment.

Who can join? The club is welcome to any player who wishes to participate, from beginners to experts. We have both a Men’s team as well as a Women’s team. We also like to practice in a coed environment to help improve our skills as well. Everyone is welcome!

Accomplishments/Opportunities: This year the Laurentian Volleyball Club hosted a Porketta bingo to fundraise money to attend tournaments and apparel, which allowed people to meet in a fun environment where they were able to socialize in the presence of food, games and drinks. We will also be hosting a Volleyball tournament March 31st and April 1st where players will be able to practice their skills in an active environment.

Karate Club

What is it? The Laurentian Karate Club is a non-profit club which offers a safe, social setting for the exchange of ideas and development of karate skills.

When and where? We train Mondays from 8pm-9pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm-7:30pm, and Sunday morning from 10am-11am. Students are welcome to attend as many or as few classes that work with their schedule. The location is the gym at the Alphonse Raymond building.

Who can join? Everyone is welcome to join the club. No experience is necessary. We also welcome those who have experience in any form of martial art.

Accomplishments/Opportunities: We are hosting the Inter-University Karate Tournament in March 2017.

Dance Pack

What is it? The dance pack is a team of dancers who come together to train and perform. There are two elements of our team; performance and competitive. The performance team and competitive team both meet twice a week.

When and where? All meetings and practices are held in the Alphonse Raymond gym.

Who can join? This is a by-audition team, and everyone is allowed and encouraged to audition!

Accomplishments/Opportunities: This year is the very first year our team has gotten the opportunity to compete against other schools!

Hunting and Fishing Club

What is it? The LU Hunting and Fishing Club is used to help students interested in hunting and fishing to meet other likeminded individuals.

Where and when? We host different events such as Wild Game Dinners, Fishing Derbies, etc.

Although we don't have any general times and dates, all students interested in our activities should join our Facebook page.

Who can join? Although registration is closed for the year, anyone can join the club. While some events require a specific licence (such as a fishing licence) other events don't. We love to see new faces and introducing others to the world of hunting and fishing.

Accomplishments/Opportunities: One of the coolest things our club will accomplish this year hasn't happened yet. On March 7th, we will be hosting our 3rd annual Wild Game Dinner. This event gives the opportunity for students to try different sorts of wildgames such as bear, venison, duck, etc.

Cheerleading Team

What is it? The Laurentian Cheerleading Team is a club which offers women and men with cheer and dance backgrounds to continue their passion in university. We instil team spirit in pep rallies, perform at soccer and basketball games and do a lot of volunteer work!

Where and when? 6am-8:30am and 9pm-11pm alternating days Monday-Friday in the varsity gym. Late night and early practices are exhausting yet somehow brings people together!

Who can join? The team is open for anyone to tryout! Beginners of course (we love our newbies), anyone with cheer or dance background and open to both men and women.

Accomplishments/ Opportunities: We performed at every single home basketball game for both the women's and men's team this year which is pretty cool and something to be proud of. We are going competing starting next year which is incredibly exciting!
