Can You Relate?

Are you short on time yet you've always wanted to get in shape? A new study that was conducted at McMaster University states that the problem with exercise sustainability is simply your workout plan. Don’t think modifying your workout plan will change things for you? Did you classify yourself as more of a couch potato than an athlete in 2016? To start, the study consisted of sedentary young adults (not active). These candidates started off in a slump and ended up having nothing but great results by the end of the trial. So, do you still think this method isn't for you? Read the method to this madness and see for yourself!

The Method!

The method HIIT (high intensity interval training) was analyzed amongst two groups of eager students longing for change in the new year. The study started by the observers splitting the participants into two groups. The groups exercised while implementing two different approaches for a 6 week period. The first group would do the HIIT method, where the second group would do moderate continuous training. Turns out, those who did high intensity interval training enjoyed their activities more as the experiment went on. The second group however, did not have an increased desire to exercise whatsoever. In fact, some of the participants' motivation decreased.

But what is HIIT?

HIIT is an acronym that stands for high intensity interval training. This training is a series of exercises that encompasses short periods of rest mixed with intense periods of "full out" exercises. So, you're essentially pouring it all out at 80 percent of your max heart rate. Working above your VO2 max has endless benefits and will surpass all those other forms of moderate light conditioning (like jogging or basic cardio workouts). Note* VO2 max = the max amount of O2 that your body can take in, deliver, and use in 1 minute. McMaster found that modifying your workouts to conform to a higher intensity will end in fantastic results.

Results...

Due to the fact that the intervals are performed at such an intense level; benefits include improvement of conditioning and strength, faster calories burned (per minute in comparison to moderate continuous exercise), higher calories burned post workout and more. McMaster University found that by the end of the trails participants who participated in HIIT found their exercises more enjoyable thus making their new workout regime more sustainable and not just a "quick fix." They had a higher desire to workout and have now adapted HIIT into their everyday lifestyles.
